The entry does the work on a house like this. A mahogany door sits under an elliptical fanlight transom with sidelights on either side, and every other element of the elevation lines up against it. Get that one composition wrong and the whole facade reads as approximate.
Symmetry is the discipline the style demands, which means the windows, the massing, and the roofline all have to answer to each other rather than to convenience. Inside, the plan runs from the entry foyer through to the family room, where the fireplace carries the same classical detailing as the front of the house.
